Child Therapy San Diego

There are times in everyone’s life when the pressures of the world can feel overwhelming. In these situations, talking to a therapist can be incredibly beneficial. While adults may have an easier time knowing when they need this help, often it is up to the adults in a child’s life to get them the help they need. If a parent or teacher is concerned about a child’s mental health, it’s best to seek help sooner rather than later. Sometimes this may be a temporary trouble relating to an event in the child’s life, such as the loss of a loved one or a divorce. However, a child may also be showing the beginnings of a deeper issue. I specialize in childhood emotional and behavioral challenges at home and school, including anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, and defiance. I work with families and schools to help meet each child's individual goals and to build children's social and coping skills.

Treatment that Families Need

I enjoy incorporating art, play, music, and biblio therapy to tailor treatment to each child and make therapy fun and engaging for kids. I have years of experience working with children in a variety of age groups, and my first concern is always creating a comfortable and safe environment for each child. I use a holistic approach that focuses on mindfulness and work with the child and family on healthy lifestyle habits to improve emotional well-being.

Play Therapy

This unique style of treatment focuses on creating a space for a child to play out their thoughts and feelings in a way that feels fun while also being therapeutic. By engaging a child in the language of play, it allows for them to role-play real-life situations, express their thoughts and feelings, and assist in processing deeper, underlying issues.

Art Therapy

This creative style of treatment is useful for both adults and children as art can be both a relaxing and immensely healing process. This style of therapy can be particularly effective when working with individuals suffering from trauma. Art therapy can allow someone to express themselves in a safe manner while they process their emotions.

Biblio Therapy

Biblio therapy is another creative style of treatment that involves the use of books and poetry to engage individuals in storytelling for the purposes of healing. Reading can engage our minds in unique ways that enrich and inspire us.

Behavioral Signs To Be Aware Of

Generally, parents and teachers can recognize when a child may be exhibiting behavioral issues. However, sometimes an adult may doubt whether a child’s actions are serious or not. Some things to look out for include excessive anger or acting out, overly aggressive behavior, bullying other children, or being the victim of bullying. Be aware of sad or depressed episodes, insomnia or increased sleepiness, decreased interest in activities, and changes in appetite or eating disorders. Some symptoms may be more apparent in a classroom setting, such as difficulty focusing, developmental delays, attention problems, or excessive absenteeism or tardiness. This is a broad overview of symptoms and behaviors, but if you are seriously concerned about your child it is best to bring them to a professional.
